Medicinal Chemistry of Anticancer Drugs

Carmen Avendano, J. Carlos Menendez "Medicinal Chemistry of Anticancer Drugs"
Elsevier Science | 2008-04-16 | ISBN: 0444528245 | 400 pages | PDF | 10,8 MB

Antitumour chemotherapy is nowadays a very active field of research, and a huge amount of information on the topic is generated every year. Although many books are available that deal with clinical aspects of cancer chemotherapy, this book addresses the need for an updated treatment from the point of view of medicinal chemistry and drug design. Cytotoxic chemotherapy is gradually being supplemented by a new generation of drugs that recognize specific targets on the surface or inside cancer cells. These therapies are in their infancy, but they hold promise of more effective therapies with fewer side effects. Resistance to antitumour drugs is another important but normally neglected field. The focus of Medicinal Chemistry of Anticancer Drugs is on the mechanism of action of antitumour drugs from the molecular point of view and on the relationship between chemical structure and chemical and biochemical reactivity of antitumour agents, aiming at the rationalization of the action of this type of drugs, which would allow the design of new active structures.

Total Cure: The Antidote to the Health Care Crisis

Harold S. Luft, "Total Cure: The Antidote to the Health Care Crisis"
Harvard University Press 2008 | ISBN-10: 0674032101 | 336 Pages | PDF | 1,9 MB

Proposals to reform the health care system typically focus on either increasing private insurance or expanding government-sponsored plans. Guaranteeing that everyone is insured, however, does not create a system with the quality of care patients want, the flexibility clinicians need, and the internal dynamics to continually improve the value of health care.

In Total Cure, Hal Luft presents a comprehensive new proposal, SecureChoice, which does all that while providing affordable health insurance for every American. SecureChoice is a plan that restructures payment for medical care, harnessing the flexibility and responsiveness of the market by aligning the incentives of clinicians, hospitals, and insurers with those of the patient. It uses the accountability of government to ensure transparency, competition, and equity.

SecureChoice has two major components. A universal pool covers the major risks of hospitalization and chronic illness, which account for almost two-thirds of all costs. Everyone would be in the pool, irrespective of employment, income, or health status. The second component emphasizes choice, flexibility, and responsibility. People will be able to choose any physician to serve as their “medical home,” to keep track of their health records, provide much of their care, and suggest referrals. Clinicians will have the information and incentives to continually enhance quality. SecureChoice also facilitates improvements in areas ranging from malpractice to pharmaceuticals and establishes new roles for key stakeholders such as health insurers.

Cystic Fibrosis in the 21st Century

Andrew Bush "Cystic Fibrosis in the 21st Century"
Publisher: S. Karger AG (Switzerland); 1 edition (October 7, 2005) | 329 Pages | ISBN: 3805579608 | PDF | 4.3 MB

Cystic fibrosis used to be thought of as a respiratory and digestive disease, with a uniformly and rapidly fatal outcome. The spectrum of the disease has broadened into the mild atypical case, presenting in middle age, with the potential for complications in virtually every system of the body. In the past few years there has been an explosion of knowledge of the basic science of the defect. The editors have therefore invited the leading scientists and clinicians in the field of cystic fibrosis to describe the recent advances in this disease. Although there are many 'Recent Advances' texts, previous books have been selective in their choice of topics. This book is the first to cover the entire field of this complex disease, and encompasses the rapidly moving topics of the basic molecular and cellular biology as well as the recent multi-system, multi-disciplinary advances in the clinical care of patients. The authors have been charged with writing only about new developments and not to rehash old literature. The bulk of the references is therefore less than five years old. This book addresses all professionals who treat cystic fibrosis and want to have an update of new findings in the field, particularly of those outside their immediate specialisation. It will also be useful for basic researchers interested in related scientific areas and the clinical context of their work

Oxford Textbook of Medicine (Three Volume Set) by David Weatherall

Oxford Textbook of Medicine (Three Volume Set) by David Weatherall, Edward J. Benz, David A. Warrell, Timothy M. Cox, John D. Firth
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA | Number Of Pages: 1228 | Publication Date: 2003-03-20 | ISBN-10: 0192629220 | PDB | 55 Mb

The Oxford Textbook of Medicine provides all that any doctor needs to know to practice top-level internal medicine. It gives compreensive coverage of the epidemiology, aetiology, and mechanism of disease, as well as clear, unambiguous coverage of the diagnosis, practical management and prevention of the entire spectrum of medical disorders.
There are major introductory sections on the scientific basis of disease; and in the system-based clinical sections genetic predisposition, pathophysiology, pathogenesis, molecular mechanisms, and cell biology are covered in depth for all significant medical syndromes. Clinical descriptions of diseases are clearly and memorably written, based on the experience and insight of the authors--many of whom are among the world's most distinguished medical scientists. Chapters are not only "evidence based" but also on clinical experience and a thorough survey of all the relevant literature. Throughout, the approach of OTM is humane and ethical and, at the same time, factual, reliable, honest(especially where knowledge is limited) and rigorously scientific.
This is not just a textbook of "First World" medicine. It provides practical guidance for doctors working in a variety of medical setting the value of a logical clinical approach rather than immediate resort to expensive imaging and laboratory tests. Moore of the contributing authors than ever before are from outside Europe, including strong representation of North American medicine.
The new editorial team has ensured that the OTM continues to reflect rapid changes in medical practice: there are new sections on intensive care, alcohol and drug abuse, clinical pharmacology and therapeutics, world health, clinical trials and evidence-based medicine, adolescent medicine, sports medicine, and emergency medicine; more than half the contributors are new for this edition; and most of the text has been heavily revised. The striking new page and cover design reflect the significant changes made in this new edition.
The Textbook is illustrated by over 2000 two-color diagrams and many color Plates. The index is the most detailed and user-friendly of any major medical textbook: in an emergency, the reader can access information quickly- whether on the ward, in office or at home.
Like its predecessors, OTM4 will be the trusted and ultimate reference in libraries, hospitals, doctors' consulting rooms, solicitors' offices, press offices, and primary care practices worldwide.

Medicine Across Cultures: History and Practice of Medicine in Non-Western Cultures

Medicine Across Cultures: History and Practice of Medicine in Non-Western Cultures
Springer | 2006 | 432 pages | ISBN: 1402011660 | PDF | 9 MB

Medicine Across Cultures: The History and Practice of Medicine in Non-Western Cultures consists of 19 essays dealing with the medical knowledge and beliefs of cultures outside of the United States and Europe. In addition to articles surveying Islamic, Chinese, Native American, Aboriginal Australian, Indian, Egyptian, and Tibetan medicine, the book includes essays on comparing Chinese and western medicine and religion and medicine. The essays address the connections between medicine and culture and relate the medical practices to the cultures which produced them. Each essay is well illustrated and contains an extensive bibliography. Because the geographic range is global, the book fills a gap in both the history of medicine and in cultural studies. It should find a place on the bookshelves of advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and scholars, as well as in libraries serving those groups
